Bowling Under the Sea...in Iowa?

Welcome to the Bass Pro Shops – Altoona blog! We’re the new kids on the block, for now, having just opened in August of 2009. Our store, like other Bass Pro Shops, gives the customer a shopping adventure mixed with merchandise and a museum feel. Throughout the store, murals and visual imagery reflect the strong heritage of the great outdoors in Iowa. But what sets our store apart? Bowling under the sea!

Iowans love their football and wrestling, but, bowling is also at the top of their list, reflective of the activity’s nationwide increased popularity. According to a recent Forbes.com article, bowling is now the top participatory sport in the U.S.; between April 2009 and March 2010, a record number of people, over 71 million, bowled in lanes around the country. Bass Pro Shops recognized that popularity and created Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill at our Altoona store, a first in its line of restaurants, with a unique nautical-themed atmosphere for family dining and bowling fun.

Enter Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill from an outside entrance or from inside the store, and you enter another world. The 12-lane alley puts you under the ocean with the sharks, sea turtles, and other sea creatures. A giant squid hangs from the ceiling, and special lighting effects take Uncle Buck’s bowlers on a virtual deep-sea dive. Strike the tenpins using the latest in score-keeping technology; and make sure to watch for the red pin on the scoring screen…you may win a free hour of bowling, if you get a strike!

There is plenty of seating for casual, family dining in the restaurant side of Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill. A main dining area with comfortable booths and tables seats 90, plus a conference room is available for meetings, private lunches, and parties.

HullSpeaking of parties, the Fishbowl has become a very popular place to hold private parties! From children’s Little Guppy birthday parties to grown-up celebrations, the Uncle Buck’s staff will help you plan the perfect party with bowling, food, beverages, and more!

Also in Uncle Buck’s, the island-theme bar area features a 750-gallon saltwater tank, filled with tropical fish. A sunken ship looms above you with more sea dwellers circling in and out of its barnacle-encrusted hull.

Located at the back of Uncle Buck’s, separate from the bowling area, is the elegant Black Widow Billiards Room, named after the Black Widow billiards player, Jeannette Lee. Two tournament tables make this a great location for pool tournaments. You can even include Black Widowbilliards in your party package.

Uncle Buck’s menu has something for all tastes and appetite sizes…steak, fish, pasta, burgers, and pizza. The All-You-Can-Eat Walleye special, “Alley Gator” gator bites with their spicy sauce, Barbeque Chicken Flatbread, Venison-stuffed mushrooms, and the infamous Trophy Burger are just some of the unique items you’ll find on the menu.

Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill restaurant hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 11:00am - 1:00 am, Friday and Saturday with the kitchen closing at 11 p.m.

Come see where the outdoors meets the indoors for the ultimate sportsman at Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill!
