The 1911

The 1911 pistol has had a tremendous following over the years, ever since John Browning introduced it in the beginning of the last century.

After the United States military adopted it as their personal defense side arm it popularity has grown exponentially. Veterans from World War one, World War two the Korean War and Vietnam loved and relied on this workhorse of a pistol.
In the 1980’s when the United States Government switched from the 1911 to the new M-9 9mm pistol the 1911’s popularity has waned. But in recent years we have seen a resurgence of this excellent sidearm, both for target and as a concealed carry pistol. With the 45acp round being one of the most inherently accurate pistol rounds and popular with many world class target shooters, it is also a very good defensive round packing a lot of energy for a concealed carry pistol cartridge. The 1911 has also shown that it can hold up to a lot of punishment and still deliver outstanding performance.

In the past there was only one option but now we have a wide range of manufactures to choose from. Colt the original manufacturer is still building a fine 1911 as well as a few new comers such as Springfield Armory, Taurus, Kimber, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson and Remington’s new R1911. All of these manufacturers offer fine firearms at varying prices to match anyone’s budget. The Kimber Company also has a nice variety of conceal carry guns, as well as target models. Smith & Wesson offers a wide range of target models, as do Taurus, Remington and Sig Sauer. All of these are available at Bass Pro Shop in stock or through special order.
The 1911 is a very good choice for a target or competition gun, given its dependability and accuracy. It also makes a fine defensive choice.
