Sunglass Basics - Lens Type and Color

Buying GOOD sunglasses can be overwhelming. There are so many features and benefits to choose from, let alone understanding all the terminology. Our Gifts and Sunglasses Lead Heather Morris breaks down some of the considerations for you when it comes to purchasing:

Lens Types - Glass vs. Polycarbonate

Glass

* Best clarity

* Holds up the best against scratches

* Very durable

Polycarbonate

* Lightweight

* Easy cleaning

* Impact resistant

* Scratch resistant

Mirrored have a coating on the outside of the lens to help cut down on glare. The differences between colored mirror lenses are:

* Blue mirror is one of two lenses that lets the least amount of light transmission through at 10%. It comes with a base color of grey.  Blue mirror lenses are best for full sun on open water and offshore.

* Green mirror is the other lens that will let the least amount of light transmission through at 10%. It comes with a copper or amber base.  Green mirror enhances vision as well as contrast for fishing inshore and on flats.

* Silver mirror has a 12% light transmission and comes with a copper base.  It's great for various lighting and works well in stream fishing.

In non-mirrored lenses, the grey lens is the darkest tint available without a mirror.  It is a great lens to use on a daily basis and all activities. The Amber lens is a good lens for those days of bright and low lights.

Quality polarized sunglasses have a film built in the lens that reduces glare from the sun, snow, and water.  Non-polarized sunglasses do not have this film and if you're going to buy a good quality pair of sunglasses Morris recommends they are polarized.

When purchasing sunglasses the biggest thing to consider, outside of your budget, is how you're going to use them. If you're getting them for  daily outdoor use for sports, fishing, or biking, Morris says consider a warranty, going with polarized lenses, and durability.  Of course, the fit is important, too!

Maui Jim - Bass Pro Shops AltoonaHer personal preference of sunglasses?  Maui Jim!

"I have two pairs, one with a grey lens and the other with the amber.  I find that they both really enhance all the colors I see as well as block out the bright sunlight.  I never squint my eyes with my Mauis on!"

Currently, at Bass Pro Shops Altoona, we carry Under Armour, Native, Oakley, Maui Jim, Costa Del Mar, Browning, Wiley X (limited pairs). We carry Maui Jim and Costa Del Mar sunglasses in both glass and polycarbonate lenses.  We carry specific models in all of our brands, but we do offer special orders if there is a particular pair you want that we do not carry.KVD - Oakley

The Sunglass Station

It’s widely known that here in Arizona the sun shines a bit brighter than in other places. So sunglasses are not only extremely convenient but can sometimes be necessary. And it’s just another one of those things we here at Bass Pro try to be there for you on. And we do a pretty darn stylish job of too!

These are a few of examples of the Costa brand sunglasses we carry. Costa was started in 1983 and has been making quality sunglasses for those with extreme outdoor adventure needs, as well as casual wear. They have a patented lens design that creates crystal clear vision for every situation.

These are a few from our friends at Maui Jim! Maui Jim is a company based in… you guessed it, Hawaii. They saw a need to protect your eyes without losing all the breathtaking color and life of the island. Perfect for everyday wear, they have a patented polarized lens technology that allows for maximum protection from harmful UVs.

Oakley sunglasses are always a good choice, for the hardcore athlete and the casual wearer alike. Founded in ‘75 they have been producing quality sunglasses that stand up to and laugh at intense use. If you haven’t heard the name then you are very, very new to the game.

Wiley-X started out making sunglasses for the military and in 1987 they made their product available to civilians. Great for outdoor enthusiasts and sports extremists alike, some models have been tested to withstand a 12-gauge shotgun blast from 10 yards away. Not bad Wiley… Not bad.

Ray-Ban… as if you didn’t already know. Started in 1937 specifically for army pilots at the time, the Aviator has been a classic and standard for all sunglass companies ever since. Also known for the Wayfarer, Ray-Ban is still at the top of their game.

XPS is a brand for the cost-conscientious consumer such as myself. They have a great selection of style and models, all of which are polarized and made to withstand everyday use.

Thank you for stopping by! Pendragon!

What's the story behind your sunglasses?

Let me give you a little history on Costa’s sunglasses.  Costa sunglasses were founded in Florida in 1983 by four fishermen who weren’t satisfied with ordinary sunglasses. That’s how Costa sunglasses began with their 400 lens that landed them in their market.  Costa Sunglasses are built by hand and backed for life.  All Costa Repair Shop calls are answered by a member of their staff in Florida.  Now, Costa sunglasses have 580 technologies and it goes beyond polarized.  There are many features of the 580 lenses. They block yellow light at 580 nanometers for greater comfort, less fatigue and enhance colors.  They also block Shortwave High-Energy Blue Light, which cuts haze and blur for crystal clarity.  They block 100% UV Light providing protection from the sun’s harmful rays and also provide 100% polarization, virtually eliminating reflected glare and reducing eye strain.  The 580’s allow you to see 2 to 3 feet deeper in water.  Come on in and try on a pair! You will love them just as much as many of our associates love them.

Did you know that the Maui Jim Sunglasses started as a vision-to create the most beautiful view under the sun?  They have several features that you will enjoy. They provide vision without glare or harmful UV.  They display a full and vibrant color. This vision has made Mai Jim Sunglasses the fastest-growing polarized sunglass company in the world. Maui Jim Sunglasses are sold worldwide and in over 25 countries.  Maui Jim Sunglasses enhance color; blues are truer. Greens are brighter. Reds are more vibrant. Maui Jim Sunglasses wipe out 99.9% of glare Blocks 100% of UV rays.

I bet you didn’t know that Costa Sunglasses and Maui Jim Sunglasses are available in prescription or reading glasses. Costa Sunglasses come in 1.75 and 2.50 strength reading glasses and Maui Jims sunglasses come in 1.50, 2.00 and 2.50 reading glasses.

 Whether you choose Costa Sunglasses or Maui Jim Sunglasses, I am sure you will be pleased. Come by and try on a pair and find that perfect fit.  Perfect for fishing, laying on the beach or driving around. We have a large selection of each to suit your needs.

Your Guide to Selecting the Best Pair of Sunglasses for Your Active Lifestyle!

Sunglass Counter

Choosing the right pair of sunglasses is often a chore all by itself. The style, the lens, and the shape all have to be just right. Here are some other options to think about when choosing a pair of sunglasses at Bass Pro Shops.

Picking a Good Pair:

  • Provide protection from ultraviolet rays.  Ultraviolet (UV) light damages the cornea and the retina.  A good pair of sunglasses can eliminate UV rays completely.
  • Provide protection from intense light. When the eye receives too much light, it closes the iris. Once it has closed the iris as far as it can, you begin  to squint. If there is still too much light, as there can be when sunlight is reflecting off of snow, the retina can become damaged.  A well-crafted pair of sunglasses can block light entering the eyes by as such as 97%.
  • Provide protection from glare. Certain surfaces, such as water, can reflect a great deal of light. Quality sunglasses can completely eliminate this kind of glare using polarization.
  • Eliminate specific frequencies of light. Certain frequencies of light can blur vision, while others can enhance contrast. Choosing the right color for your sunglasses will allow them to work better in specific light and environmental situations.

The Perfect Pair:

Sunglasses come in many shapes, colors and sizes. In order to find the perfect pair of sunglasses, you need to match the features to fit your lifestyle.  Here are some important features to compare when buying a pair of sunglasses.

  • Lens Material
  • Lens Quality
  • Special Coatings
    • Anti-Reflective Coating
    • Lens
    • Polarizing Film
    • Scratch Resistant Coating
    • Mirror Coating
  • Frame and Lens Design
  • Frame Material

 Lens Tinting:

  • Gray Tints
  • Yellow or Gold Tints
  • Amber and Brownish Tints
  • Green Tints
  • Purple and Rose Tints

Ultra-Violet Coating:  Several serious eye problems can be linked to one cause: UV light. Intense and prolonged exposure to UV radiation can cause cancer of the eye.

A good UV coating on your sunglasses can eliminate UV radiation, and you should check to make sure that your sunglasses filter out 100 percent of UV rays. There should be a statement on the label telling you how much UV protection the sunglasses have. You want 100% protection.Oakley

Polarized Lens: Polarization can occur either naturally or artificially. You can see an example of natural polarization every time you look at the surface of a lake or river. The reflected glare off the surface is the light that does not make it through the water, and is the reason why you often cannot see anything below the surface, even though the water may be very clear.

CostaBass Pro Shops has  the best selection of the most popular brands of sunglasses available including our own Bass Pro Shops brands, Maui Jim, Costa, Ray Ban and Oakley just to name a few. Please see the knowledgeable associates in the Sunglass Department for answers to your questions. They are happy to give you tips on sunglasses and help you select the best pair that fits your needs.

The Eyes have it!

As a fisherman I believe in sunglasses for more than one reason. For years I went fishing without sunglasses, not knowing the damage that the sun could do to my eyes. The same UV rays that bleach out the seats in your boat, fade the paint on your vehicle and burn your skin can cause serious damage to your eyes. Most vehicles today have what they call ‘Solar Ray’ glass which filters out most of the harmful UV rays. But in our boats, we have no protection so it is very important to wear sunglasses that have a UV protection. Some of the glasses can cost upwards of $300 or more like, Costa Del Mar, Maui Jim, Wiley-X, Oakley, Flying Fisherman and so on. These brands make some real high quality and very nice eye wear, but you do not have to spend a small fortune to protect your eyes. Flying Fisherman also makes some very affordable, nice eye wear as well for under $30. Bass Pro Shops XPS also makes some very nice sunglasses with the UV protection you need and in a large variety of styles. BPS even has the ‘Fish Eyes’ line that has a magnifying bifocal to help you tie your favorite knot without changing to your reading glasses. I use these because of some of the damage I did to my eyes when I was younger and thought I was indestructible. Head to your closest Bass Pro Shops and talk with our friendly and knowledgeable associates who will help you find the right eye wear for you and your budget. Remember to be safe and courteous on the water, protect yourself and others. Always use sunscreen on your skin and polarized sunglasses with UV protection for your eyes.

 Bass Wishes;

Costa Del Mar

Now that I have told you what we carry. let me tell you about some of the benefits.  Using polarized sunglasses helps to cut the glare when you are out on that beautiful lake catching fish, looking up in the sky to get those birds, across the field watching the deer come in makes the experience that much better when you don’t have the sun getting in your eyes.  It also protects your eyes from harmful rays from the sun.  My husband has owned a pair of polarizes glasses for years and will not go out fishing without them, they help him see into the water and keeps the glare off the water if he is using a bobber to fish so he doesn’t miss a hit on the line.

So if you are in need of a new pair or just want to see what we have stop on bye our Gurnee store.  If you have any question, please just ask any of our associates and they will be more than willing to give you a hand in selecting a pair that is just right for you.

Guy Harvey, world-renowned artist, photographer, scientist and conservationist, has teamed up with Maui Jim to create his own line of unique sunglasses. A few weeks ago, I received a pair of these sunglasses to review and give my thoughts to the manufacturer.

As most of you already know I am a very honest person that calls it as I see it. The Maui Jim - Guy Harvey collections are very stylish looking sunglasses for general wear. These sunglasses definitely fit a slender person’s face very well.

Every pair of sunglasses in the Guy Harvey Collection sports have a really cool looking painting on the inside temples featuring Guy Harvey’s artwork. The sunglasses come with a patented temple design that lets you create a custom retainer by threading a piece of fishing line through the built-in openings located on the arms of the sunglasses. These sunglasses offer sleek lines, a rubberized nosepiece for added comfort, and tall temples that better block the side glare you get from the sun. The lenses are made of SuperThin glass technology that features polarized which are both scratch and impact resistant, and nylon frames. The blue rectangular frames are very lightweight and durable.

GO OUTDOORS!  IT’S GOOD FOR YOU!

Free Outdoor Essential Classes and Kids Summer Kickoff Challenge

Springfield, Missouri—(May 1, 2012)—Ask any adult what they remember best about childhood and chances are they will recall riding their bikes, building forts and tree houses and generally playing outdoors until after dark.  Kids were connected—to each other, their family and the outdoors.  And, according to several studies, they were physically and emotionally healthier. Information taken from The Conservation Fund website at http://www.conservationfund.org/children-nature states that researchers suggest “that the decline in children’s health is linked, in part, to their growing disconnect from nature and outdoor activity.”

Much national attention is being paid to this dilemma—so much that in early 2011 a report entitled America's Great Outdoors: A Promise to Future Generations”  was released that was part of President Obama's America's Great Outdoors Initiative.  It’s an effort to reconnect Americans to the outdoors. A separate report was produced based on "youth listening sessions" in which young people expressed a strong desire to spend time outdoors.  (Read more about the report )

Bass Pro Shops has long recognized the short and long term benefits for kids and adults being involved in the outdoors.  Their National Go Outdoors Event was developed as a way to give families the opportunity to learn all of the outdoor skills needed to make their next outdoor adventure a great one and to reconnect with each other in the beauty of the great outdoors.  This year’s Bass Pro Shops Go Outdoors Event will take place at 55 store locations in the United States May 18th-28th.

Go Outdoors Event 2012

go outdoors

Much national attention is being paid to this dilemma—so much that in early 2011 a report entitled “America's Great Outdoors: A Promise to Future Generations”  was released that was part of President Obama's America's Great Outdoors Initiative.  It’s an effort to reconnect Americans to the outdoors. A separate report was produced based on "youth listening sessions" in which young people expressed a strong desire to spend time outdoors.

Exciting free events at the stores could include canoe and kayak demonstrations, casting contests, rock climbing walls, GPS classes, kid’s crafts, outdoor skills workshops, Dutch oven cooking, outdoor survival training and much, much more. There’s even the opportunity to get a great FREE 4x6 Family Photo download. (Events will vary per store.  Please visit www.basspro.com/gooutdoors ((beginning May 7)) and select individual store location for events listing.)

The Go Outdoors Event includes a “Summer Kickoff Challenge” with free weekend activities for kids Memorial Day weekend May 26th and 27th. From 11am to 4pm kids can learn how to set up a tent, compete in a sleeping bag race and enjoy a metal detector treasure hunt.  The first 100 kids in each store to complete the Summer Kickoff Challenge each day will receive a fun bug glider.  Kids will also be able to do a sand art craft from 12noon until 4pm Saturday, May 26th and paint a wooden insect craft Sunday, May 27th  (while supplies last; styles may vary).

Have you seen the new Maui Jim – Peahi sunglasses?

Oh my gosh, have you seen the new Maui Jim – Peahi sunglasses?

 My favorite time of the year is spring, because I try to be on the water as much as possible to fish and pleasure boat. Last week, I had the opportunity to be on the water for six days at the Georgia TBF Top 6 on Clark Hill Lake. All week I wore tried out the new Maui Jim – Peahi sunglasses.

Pe’ahi (“peh-AH-hee”), the name comes from an area located on Maui’s northern shore; known for its big waves and extreme high waves, 0 feet tall. This area is a legendary reef break and respectfully referred to by surfers as “Jaws." Peahi is where classic fashion meets versatility.

Maui Jim Sunglasses, newest style sunglasses are called the Peahi. Not only are these glasses stylish, but they are very comfortable. These Maui Jim’s sunglasses will continue to give you the ultimate coverage and protection against wind, debris and UV rays in a generously proportioned wrap that’s big on style. They are very lightweight, flexible, sporty and hypoallergenic. The Peahi’s come with a built-in non-slip nose pad to ensure total comfort. These sunglasses are designed to be worn in salt water with its corrosion-proof nickel/silver alloy hinges. All Maui Jim sunglasses have scratch/impact resistant lightweight polarized lenses that provide incredible clarity on and off the water.

Maui Jims

The Maui Jim Peahi Sunglasses are made to block out harmful glare and still allows you to see the vivid colors around you. They come with a super-thin glass (ST Glass) lens that can be used for general wear. The ST Glass is 20% thinner and lighter than conventional glass giving you a superior optic that is durability and scratch resistance without the weight of a conventional glass lens. Polarized Plus 2 technology purpose is to block the glare and UV from all angles. This allows the lenses to manage blue light and then boost colors for unmatched color clarity and contrast. HCL Bronze Lens is perfect for low-light conditions or for those who like a subtle bronze hue for everyday wear. I personally really like the excellent contrast a bronze lens offers you. The adjustable metal core temples create a personalized fit to anyone face. Spring hinges gently hug a person’s head for a lasting comfortable fit. Interesting fact I noticed is these sunglasses are made in Italy. A case is included with all Maui Jim Sunglasses.

When you purchase a pair of quality sunglasses, you expect a good warranty. Maui Jim's warranties its products against damage and defects. This is effective for the first two years of original ownership with proof of purchase. Though the company will repair or replace the product free of charge at its discretion, shipping fees are the owner's responsibility. In addition, Maui Jim is not responsible for repairing prescription sunglasses' lenses, but the company can repair a damaged or defective frame from a prescription pair.

It never seems like summer without a little nautical flair. Lots of Breton stripes, plaids, anchors, bright reds, and navys set the tone for a chic, relaxed wardrobe and summer.

Look for transitional, lightweight  jackets and sweaters that can keep you warm on cool summer nights and some plaid shorts for the preppy vibe. Don't be afraid to mix prints, like a plaid shirt with pinstripe denim! Top it off with a cool pair of shades and a anchor or rope necklace or bracelet, and you're set!

Polarized Sunglasses: An Angler's Best Friend

Ask a variety of anglers to identify their most important piece of equipment and you’ll get a variety of answers. In my opinion, the most important piece of equipment you should take on the water with you is a quality pair of polarized sunglasses.

JimWe’ve all had to shield our eyes from sunlight reflecting off the water or “glare.” Glare is caused when reflected light aligns horizontally, in high concentrations. Polarized lenses block this horizontal light that is being reflected towards our eyes. Glare on the water’s surface is also removed, leaving clear vision and the ability to “see” through the water.

The benefits of polarized lenses are the ability to see through the surface of the water and protection of your eyes.  Polarized lenses first became available in 1936, when Edward Land began experimenting with making lenses using his patented Polaroid filter.  Quality polarized sunglasses are relatively easy to find.  Some of the more popular brands include Oakley, Ray-Ban, Maui Jim and Costa Del Mar.Vandam

Seeing through the water’s surface allows you to spot fish, locate underwater structures and identify changes in depth. Polarized lenses help protect the eye from ultraviolet radiation.

Lenses are available in a variety of colors, each with different advantages depending on the conditions in which you’re fishing.

            Gray: General purpose tint, good choice for sunny and bright days.

            Brown: Best compromise between color and contrast. Good for sensitive eyes.

            Copper: Best on cloudy or overcast days.

            Amber: Enhances available light, good for dusk and dawn.

Find a pair of sunglasses that fits well is another consideration.  The frames should fit snugly on your nose and ears, but not pinch or rub. The weight should be evenly distributed between ears and nose.

Finally, like any other pieces of fishing equipment, there are accessories to consider.  If your sunglasses didn't come with a hard or padded case, buy one. This will protect from scratches and crushing, and will help keep your lenses clean. A microfiber cleaning cloth will prevent lens scratches and a retainer or neck strap is practically a requirement.

A polarized pair of sunglasses is just as important as your tackle and rods. Choosing the right pair will protect your eyes from the elements (and the errant mis-cast) and help you catch more fish!
