Headed North? Alaska Travel Tips

The past month or so, Bass Pro Shops Altoona has had former associate Jake Fergesen, a northeast Iowa native, helping us out.  Jake was with us when we opened, progressing to hunting lead and camping lead positions, then transferred to the East Peoria store where he became Hunting Manager. Now Jake will be the new Fishing Manager at the Anchorage store, which opens in 2014.

Jake is familiar with Alaska, having worked there a few years back. Since so many people travel to Alaska, we asked him to share some basic tips.

________________________________

Helpful Tips for Travelling to Alaska

by Guest Blogger Jake Fergesen, BPS Anchorage Fishing ManagerJake Fergesen

*  Bug Spray - The beautiful vistas of Alaska are known around the world. But, one thing you don't always see are the bugs. You will need bug deterrent pretty much anytime you're outside in the summer.

As soon as I got settled into my new Alaska location, I was anxious to do some fishing. I had only been there a few days and was ready to attack the fish. On my first fishing outing, after about a minute into it, I realized I was the one under attack.. Even with all my excitement, the fishing only lasted about 5-10 minutes.

Now, bug spray is with me wherever I go in Alaska. 100% DEET is the best bet, but if you're wearing Gortex and/or fishing, you need to remember a couple of things. DEET can eat away at the fishing line and the Gortex membrane on waders and rain gear. So, a DEET-free product - like Sawyer® Premium Insect Repellent 20% Picaridin - might be a preferable choice, as Picaridin doesn't harm your equipment and gear. Wherever you go in Alaska, always have it with you. I leave my spray in the fishing tackle, kayak, and in the car.

*  Binoculars - Make sure you have binoculars that are compact and easy to carry. You want the most magnification that you can hold steady...a 10 power is recommended. Again, binoculars should always be with you. I've been driving down the Seward Highway and spotted a grizzly and her two cubs on a river bank far away and could enjoy them with my binoculars from a safe distance. You never know when that moose or bear is going to give you a view to appreciate and remember.Alaskan Bear Fishing

*  Bear Spray – The chance of having a close encounter with a bear are slim, but you always want to have your head on a swivel and be mindful. I was wading and fishing the Russian River for sockeye salmon and had a few encounters with a bear that was also fishing for its food. The bear was within probably 20 yards. You stay calm – talk to it in a loud non-aggressive tone. Unless they are with cubs, surprised, or have been conditioned to people giving them fish, bears are mostly curious. The last thing you want to do is throw a fish. Keep all your gear within arms length. On the river I was at, and many other rivers, you can actually get fined if you have a pack or tackle box and it’s not within 10 feet or so or within reach.

*  Rain gear - Are you going to be in and out of rain? Then lightweight and packable rain gear, like Frogg
Toggs, would probably work. But, if you know and are planning on spending all day in the rain, go with a heavy duty rain set, like Helly Hanson – real rubberized stuff. Helly Hansen makes rainwear that the fishermen and oil workers use with 100% waterproof protection.

*  Sun Protection - Visitors to Alaska often overlook sun protection due to the cooler temperatures, but coming from someone who's learned the hard way, it is an item you need to remember to take. I was enjoying t-shirt weather, around 80 degrees, on a raft fishing all day Riverside Camping in Alaskalong...warm, but not scorchingly hot. I was having fun and not feelilng the heat...until later that night when a serious sunburn appeared.

*  Camera/Memory Cards - The camera is an obvious one, but you'll take so many pictures you might need to bring an extra memory along with you so you don't run out. Most cell phones have a pretty good camera, but if you have a good digital camera with a zoom, you'll want to bring it. On a trip to Denali I saw pretty much everything – caribou, moose, etc. I took decent pictures of Dall rams up on a mountainside because I had a camera with a good zoom.

But, keep in mind:  Try not to get so caught up in taking pictures that you miss actually seeing what's around you. Put down the camera, once in a while, and enjoy the beauty without the lens.

Alaska Glacier

*  Layers - In the summer, the mornings can be in the 40s and the middle of the day can get up close to 80. You'll want layers you can shed as the day goes on. Go with synthetic fibers and avoid cotton because there's a good chance it will rain some and you'll get wet.

Alaska in the summer is amazing. It's light out almost 24 hours a day, which allows you to get more out of each day.  As large as Alaska is, you won't be able to see everything in one trip. Identify the area you most want to see and plan your trip for that. Make a list...the next area on your list that you want to see will give you that reason to take another trip north to Alaska!

Rain, rain, go ahead and stay?

It’s been raining a lot here in Columba, but that doesn’t stop most of you devoted outdoors people from going outside! In fact, it sometimes pays to be outside in the rain. For example, aside from getting a free shower, you are more likely to catch fish (in mild sprinkle, not torrential downpour). So, to help keep your devotion to the outdoors from getting too soggy, here are some products we offer for your hunting, fishing and camping needs.

Bass Pro Shops Bone Dry jacket

This is a really great rain jacket for men, and it’s on sale right now! It is the Bass Pro Shops High Performance Rainwear BONE-DRY Waterproof rain jacket. The name is a mouthful but basically it’s waterproof and breathable and has a hood with a flexible visor along with six very handy pockets. It’s $94.97 and is regularly $104.97.

Bas sPro Shops Bone Dry pants

Some of you may think you don’t need rain pants, but you’ll be a lot happier wearing them! Once you have the jacket don’t you want your legs and bottom to be dry too while spending time outside in the rain? Not to worry, these are on sale too for $74.97 and are regularly $84.97 bearing the same name as the jacket (Bass Pro Shops HPR BONE-DRY Waterproof Rain Pants for men). If you think you’re too cool for suspenders they are removable and have four pockets with hook ‘n’ loop ankle cuffs to help with keeping water and whatever else you’re stepping in out of your shoes.

Speaking of…good rain shoes are a must-have.

Boots

Our store offers a variety of great boots, but these are a good example. RedHead Guide 16” Waterproof Non-Insulated Rubber Boots for Men are good for the summer rain because they aren’t insulated but still give you great, light, protection. Along with durable rubber, this boot also has an ankle-fit design so it won’t slide off easily when your foot gets stuck in the mud. They are $99.99.

Now that the men are ready for their rainy outdoor adventures it’s time for the ladies.

shoes

We carry ladies’ boots as well but a great alternative is a waterproof shoe. It has great traction and keeps your foot completely dry with its neoprene collar. If you don’t like tucking your pants into your boots these are great, but don’t step too far into water without waterproof pants. These Pro Line Camper Waterproof Shoes for Ladies and Youth are $39.99.

rain coat

Bass Pro Shops Packable Rain Jacket for Ladies is a great lightweight option that you can fold real tiny and bring with you on your adventures. It has an attached hood with drawcords on the bottom, sleeves, and hood to seal out any rain. The best part? It comes in great colors like Blue Moon and Crimson for $29.99 with the regular price of $34.99.

pants

Another easily squishable rain gear item to put in your pack is the Bass Pro Shops Packable Rain Pants for ladies. They don’t come in any other color, but that’s good because they go with anything. It’s very lightweight and made of durable ripstop nylon. The drawcord ankles and waist make sure you’ll stay extra dry for $19.99.

If you have any questions or can’t find these products in our store, just ask an associate. They can also give you other options and tips for staying dry going on outdoor adventures.

Layer, Layer, Layer

Layer, Layer, Layer

By Mark Campagnola

Any time you hunt from October through March there is always a high possibility for bad weather. Even towards the end of September you are running the chance of dealing with some really nasty elements. The last time I hunted elk with a gun (1976) we had above normal temperatures the first few days of the hunt and then a snow storm came in overnight dumping almost 2 feet of snow followed by some very frigid temperatures. The storm was bad enough that my brother Gene and I had to walk the horses out instead of riding them because the danger of one slipping and going down with you on top was very high. With that said, what type of clothing do you need for a late season hunt?

It wasn't too long ago that wearing big, bulky clothing was the norm.  However, the days of walking around like the Michelin Man are over. The technology of today’s clothing allows you to layer like many years ago but with less bulk, less weight, and less sweat. When you hike you sweat,  the more you perspire the wetter your clothes become and the colder you will be when you stop for any length of time. Plus your chances for getting hyperthermia are heightened. This is where the layering effect comes in handy.

The most important piece is choosing the correct base layer.  Base layers are the first piece of clothing you put on.  The are supposed to be light weight, breathable, and moisture wicking for your comfort. Base layers come in a multitude of choices, from cool early fall weather down to very cold extreme 20 below zero weather. Bass Pro/Red Head has two different types of base layers, first is their Endura Skin and second is the Red Head XPS Premium Base Layers.

The Red Head Endura Skin has two types of All Season Performance Base Layers. Relaxed Fit and Compression Fit, both have Anti-Odor Technology (AXE) and 4-way stretch fabric that is form fitting, comfortable, and wicks moisture away as you sweat.

The Red Head XPS Premium Base Layers have the whole gamut of base layers you would ever need for any type of hunting you could come up with. From those cool crisp fall mornings to the middle of winter when it could be 30 below, Red Head XPS Premium Base Layers have you covered with four different styles? From the Base Layer 1.0, Midweight 2.0, Expedition Weight 3.0, and the High –Loft XTREAM 4.0 All four have the new X-Odor for anti-odor protection.

Everyone is different when it comes to what type of base layer that works the best for different situations. If my son and I were on a goose hunt and were sitting in a pit blind I may use the Expedition Weight 3.0 and my son might use the Mid-weight 2.0 because he has a higher metabolism and doesn’t need that little extra added warmth.  If you do a lot of cold weather hunting, try these base layers out. You might find out what you have been missing out on for so long.

Now that I have the right base layer on for the weather conditions I’ll put my HECS Stealthsceen top and bottom on over my base layer and then a True Fit T-Shirt and then my Silent-Hide pants and Silent-Hide button up shirt. From here I wear a fleece vest under my Silent-Hide hooded sweatshirt jacket. With this layering and a good pair of boots and gloves I can hunt in below freezing weather all day.

So this is all well and good you say, but what about while your out and the weather starts getting worse, the wind starts blowing harder, the temperature starts dropping, then what? This is why I always carry a day pack when I’m out. When I’m in this possible situation I always have one of two sets of rain gear with me. The first set I carry all the time is the Red Head Stretch Rainwear. This rain gear, pants and coat, packs down to a size that’s a little bit bigger than a softball each and takes up very little room in my pack. Stretch Rainwear is not insulated to help with the colder temps but it is wind proof so it will keep the wind chill factor down. My other set of rain gear is the Squaltex bibs and coat which is insulated, water proof, and wind proof, but it doesn’t pack down as small as my Stretch Rainwear does. With the right base layer and the rest of my layering system on plus adding my Squaltex rain gear I can stay out in some pretty nasty weather for a long time.

The above is how I layer for most hunts, but, when I know the weather will be below zero with the wind and/or snow or just flat out cold I break out my Red Head 200 gram Thermolite insulated parka and my 150 gram Thermolite insulated bibs, both are wind and water proof. I still keep my Stretch Rainwear in my pack along with an extra pair of gloves, hat for my ears and a full face mask to cover my whole head and face down past my neck line.

I’ve been out where the ambient temperature was 5 degrees with a steady wind of 8 mph and wind gusts over 35 mph giving us wind chills between 20 and 25 degrees below zero. I was able to record all this with my Brunton ADC Summit, and with the way I layered, I was able to stay out about six hours and not get cold, plus I had the mobility to move around without any problem. On this trip I wore all the above plus my Red Head 16”Ultra Hunter side-zip boots with 1200 grams of Thinsulate. The gloves I wore were the Red Head Insulated Hunter Glove with 70 grams of Thinsulate. Without any of the above there was no way I could have stayed out any longer then maybe a half hour.

Frogg Toggs

Is it time for new rain gear? If you have holes in your jacket, if it no longer fits, or if the rain protection has declined, then your answer is yes. While looking for rainwear, you will find numerous brands and styles with prices from $3 to $1,000. For most people the expensive rain gear is over kill, similar to swatting a fly with a bazooka. On the other hand, the rule "you get what you pay for" usually applies. Thankfully, this saying is not always true. With Frogg Toggs Outerwear you will get a quality that greatly exceeds the the price. This brand of rainwear offers various styles and sizes. The rainwear is lightweight and packable. Perhaps the most intriguing feature of the Frogg Toggs Outerwear brand is the fabric that is used for the rain gear.

While exploring rainwear options you will find that Frogg Toggs offer some of the largest selections in sizes, styles, and colors. For the person who is always out in the rain they offer jackets with an external shell that provides warmth and durability. If you are looking for children's rainwear, they offer smocks that will cover nearly the entire body. They also offer hats for people who don't like hoods, as well as hoods that are removable. They come in various colors and thicknesses, so you will be able to find a jacket that is perfect for you.  Frogg Toggs are available in jackets, pants, or both.

One thing that makes Frogg Toggs very practical for many scenarios is the fact that it is light weight and packable. This makes it an excellent choice to carry along with you on the lake, or even on the golf course. Most Frogg Togg products come with a small pouch that will hold your rain gear, making it a non issue to bring your rainwear nearly everywhere a storm may hit. These features make Frogg Toggs perfect for work and play.

When most people see and feel Frogg Toggs for the first time, the first question is usually, "is it really waterproof?" The second question is normally, "is it really breathable?" The answer to both questions is yes. The reason these questions come up so often is the material in which Frogg Toggs are made. The material probably feels more like paper than typical rainwear. It is very light and thin, and does not seem like what you have in mind when one thinks of rainwear. This is where Frogg Toggs will have an advantage over most rainwear available. Through a patented process of layering polypropylene they have created a material that is very unique.

Because it is the rainy season, many people are out shopping for rain gear. Most people do not want to spend  alot of money on something they only use part of the year, but they also do not want to waste money on a product that does not work. Frogg Toggs are an excellent choice because of the affordability and quality. If you need light weight, packable rainwear, come to Bass Pro and take a look at our Frogg Togg selection.

White River Fly Shop Report:The Spawn is coming!

My wife and I recently went to the Little Red. We had a great time. Fishermen were sparse. You could fish where you wanted. The Rainbows were hungry and taking a lot of different flys. Purple hazes and Black Zebra midges worked best for me. Only caught 3 small Browns all weekend. I had a customer come in a  week ago and said he had a deep hole by Libby Shoals that was full of 18 to 24 inch Browns. The Spawn should be here very soon!

Local Fly News: On a sad note, it is reported that the Blue RibbonFly Shop has been taken over by the bank. Dalley's and Two Rivers Fly Shop have changed hands. Rim Shoals is for sale and Riley Station was auctioned off on the 17th. Bass Pro is still here for all your Fly Fishing needs!

Cooler weather is quickly approaching, so make sure you have the mittens on! Stop by and check our Frog Toggs selection of rainwear. This will come in handy the next few weeks!

See you in the Fly Shop & tell 'em the Fly Guy sent you!

Fishing in the Rain - Goretex 100 MPH

Winter is getting closer and the fish are heading to deeper waters. With the right equipment, pulling fish out of the water can be just as productive in the winter as in the summer. The thing that keeps most boaters from hitting the water to hook the big one is the weather. Heavy winter wind and rain can definitely put a damper on a fishing trip, but there is hope. Wearing rain gear is the best defense against the wrath of mother nature, but it is often very uncomfortable, and not effective against all conditions. Goretex has solved these problems with the combination of breathable waterproof technology combined with extreme wind resistance. With the complete system of Goretex 100 mph rainwear, you will be able to fish as much as you like, regardless of heavy winter conditions. With the addition of Goretex Wind Stopper jacket liners and Goretex 100 mph gloves, the Goretex 100 mph system will make the most uncomfortable conditions seem like a walk in the park.

The Goretex 100 mph system is one the highest quality rain suits available. It consists of a jacket and bibs. The jacket is also available as a parka, which is slightly longer than the regular jacket. The material is breathable and very flexible making it one of the most comfortable rain suits you will ever wear.  The jackets are available with nylon liners or just the shell. The jackets also include waterproof pockets that will certainly come in handy while on the water.  Cuffs to both the jacket sleeve, and bib legs have a closure system that allows the user to tighten the cuffs so that no water can come through. The material itself, is breathable, so you will not have to worry about getting too hot in your rainwear. Another great feature of the 100 mph Goretex is that it is very wind resistant. The wind resistance can also be increased.

Increasing wind resistance is as simple as adding the Wind Stopper liner to your jacket. The polyester liner will keep you warm, and protected from the heaviest of winds, but still retain the breathability that Goretex is famous for. This feature is great for the winter angler, as well as boaters who like to travel at high speeds. With the Goretex 100 mph system and the Wind Stopper liner, wind and rain will quickly turn into a none issue. Goretex did not stop with jackets, bibs, and liners.

Goretex has also developed 100 mph gloves to incorporate into their system. This is a great addition to the 100 mph family, because, even when your body is warm and dry, cold wet hands can lead to uncomfortable trip on the water. While wearing the jacket, bib, liner, and gloves, you will not feel as if you are too uncomfortable to fish. You will retain full mobility as well as gain confidence that your rain gear is ready for any condition.

Goretex remains to be a leader in the rain wear industry and continues to implement new technology to improve what is available. If you have had trouble with poorly functioning or uncomfortable rain wear in the past, you will not be disappointed with Goretex 100 mph. To learn more about Goretex 100 mph and to try them on visit a local Bass Pro.

Basic Turkey Hunting Clothing

Basic Turkey Hunting Clothing

The turkey is an animal with very keen eyesight, this means that you have to conceal yourself and minimize your movement to capture your prey within shooting range. Your surroundings will dictate your choice of pattern for your hunt, but I believe that a good lightweight rain suit is a practical and logical choice. Buying your jacket and pant a bit larger will allow you to layer with your long johns if needed, and by giving you a versatile option.

Rainwear:

            Squaltex II:

This is a Bone-Dry product that is windproof, waterproof and breathable membrane, which is a quiet polyester outer shell with a mesh lining in the inside. The jacket features a full zip with a storm flap and snaps. The visor hood has bungee draw chords, fleece lined hand warmer pockets, below pockets for accessories along with nylon cuffs on the wrists.

The pants have a snap and fly elastic waist with buttons on the inside to allow you to wear pants with button suspenders. The pants are mesh lined to the knee and then nylon down to the ankle for easy on/off with boots.

The other option available is the bib, which has adjustable suspenders, front zip with storm flaps with snaps, side gusset panels and bottom snaps on both legs. These products are machine washable.

            Stretch Rainwear:

The stretch rainwear is a lightweight polyester spandex, waterproof/breathable product, allowing 4-way stretch movement ranges but packs into its own small pouch. This is available in a jacket with adjustable hood. Two slash zip pockets. The pants feature elastic waist snaps on ankle cuffs. This product is to be hand washed.

            Redhead Gore-Tex Pro Light Rainwear:

This product is a lightweight performance shell, waterproof/windproof as well as breathable.  These pieces pack into their own pockets for easy storage. The jackets have a zip off visor hood, underarm ventilation zip hood and loop cuff adjustments. The pants have elasticized waist with belt loops, front fly with snaps and side leg zips with a hook and loop closures.

Apparel:

            True-Fit T-Shirts

These are a selection of base layer t-shirts, which possess the lowest shrink rate, a comfortable fit and versatile piece for every hunter regardless of their prey. These shirts come in both short and long sleeve in 5 various patterns and are machine washable. Other features include ribbed neck/cuffs along with a single chest pocket. Washing instructions are printed on the garment so that there are no annoying tags.

If you require a second layer you should consider the Henley, mock t-neck or the t-neck. Again these have the lowest shrink rate, comfortable fit that make these products a must for the hunter in your family.

            Redhead Silent-Hide Shirt and Pants:

The silent-hide collection is known for its breathable, durability, quietness coupled with its lightweight fabric is an excellent choice for the turkey hunter. The shirts come in various patterns in sizes S-6XL. The back yoke, collar and cuffs are all lined adding to your comfort. There are also 2 button-flap front pockets.

The pants are sized from S- 6XL in various patterns and include an adjustable waist tab, belt loops, below cargo pockets on each thigh.

Also offered are bibs, which are roomy with a reinforced seat, drawstring cuffs. Again these are the silent-hide line, which is the breathable, lightweight quiet fabric.

Footwear:

            Camo Boots:

The boots that you will need will be dependent on where and when you hunt. But, a good rule of thumb is to invest in boots that will be versatile for your various hunting needs. The boots that I recommend would be ones that are waterproof and lightly insulated. Another good rule of thumb is that it must be big enough for you to put heavy socks on in colder weather conditions without hurting your toes or heels. I opt for a high boots for support and protection; you can always touch your pants leg into the boot.

The 7” jackal boot is non-insulated, lightweight and has the Gore-Tex comfort lining. Rugged and lightweight these boots would be a must have for any hunter.

Another non-insulated boot option would be the redhead silent-hide stalker boot, bone-dry (windproof/waterproof/breathable), quiet, flexible and quite durable. These boots are compact for packing away after use.

For an insulated boots, I would opt for the Tracker boot by RedHead, either the 8” leather/nylon 800 gram insulated boots or the 8” 40 gram insulated boots. These boots both have Gore-Tex with moisture wicking abilities. Also these boots have the RedHead comfort pad, which absorbs shock while aiding in comfort.

            Face and Hands

When turkey hunting, it’s especially important to conceal your face and your hands. If your hands are moving and your face is shiny the gobbler will notice. For face concealment there are many options to choose from, having said that I will give you a couple of recommendations.

The RedHead short-billed cap with face mask is my personal favourite, the mesh is attached to the edge of the hat so that is does not sit right on your face. The hat is short-billed so as not to hamper with your shooting.

The second option is the RedHead form fit full-facemask; it’s cool, breathable nylon mesh adjusts to fit with an elastic headband. This is one size fits most, and is easily stored in your pocket when not needed.

            Gloves:

The RedHead strut zone gloves are lightweight, moisture wicking and have rubber grip palms coupled with acrylic knit shell. These gloves allow you the manual dexterity needed in the field.

The gobbler gloves are polyester/lycra lightweight fabric with coolmax capabilities, control dots on palms to aid in gripping. Another feature is the extra long cuff for concealment.

Happy Turkey Hunting;

Corina

Fishing Rainwear

With fishing season upon us, fishing rainwear is a must as there is a high probability of you getting wet! You best defense is to make informed choices based on your budget needs, construction of suit, durability, usage, and the weight size just to name a few considerations.

With the above factors in mind I have decided to review three products that will meet your fishing rainwear needs without a doubt! The High Performance Rainwear (HPR), Gore-Tex 100 MPH Rainwear and the Gore-Tex Pro Qualifier Rainwear. Each of these products will provide you with waterproof option to fit any budget.

The High Performance Rainwear (HPR), is Bone Dry ® product which means that it is waterproof and breathable. This product is available in a jacket and bib-pants, which can be purchased as separates. This option is especially convenient as it allows you to select sizes to fit your body comfortably as opposed to a suit that comes in one specific size that fits only half your body comfortably.

One of the many features of this HPR rainwear is the 100% nylon, which makes this product lighter in weight and easier to stow away when not needed but also providing waterproof and breathability properties guaranteed to keep you dry. Articulated sleeves are a must for the angler allowing for full rang e of motion. The hood, with a flexible visor and a roll back closure is great feature allowing you to protect your glasses from the elements while securing the hood when required.

The HPR bib-pants are again a Bone Dry ® product which can be worn as pants by removing the bib straps if desired. The adjustable elastic waist ensures the garment to fit the body. The fact that this garment is machine washable ensures that the cleaning and maintenance will be quicker as you do not have to wait to get it back from the cleaners and that it will not drain the wallet due to cleaning costs!

The HPR is a waterproof, breathable, lightweight product that can be considered for cross-functional outerwear use. This product is sold separately but when both pieces are purchased together you have a winning system for rainwear protection!

Bone Dry Rain Jacket

Bone Dry Rain Pants

100 MPH Gore-Tex® rainwear is the hard-core anglers answer to extreme wet weather conditions. The roomy zip-off visor hood is just what you need to keep the rain and snow off your face. The articulated elbows accommodate the movements of casting while allowing comfort hour after hour while tournament fishing. The option of purchasing the windproof liner as either a stand-alone jacket or inserted as a liner for your parka for extra warmth, is just the trick for those cold damp days. The drop down hip cover on the parka coupled with the high back bib provides additional insulation for your lower back. The bib also has elastic web side belts with Velcro® tabs so that you can customize the fit and enhance the level of comfort.

Bass Pro Shops 100 MPH Gore-Tex Rain Bibs

You have the ability to purchase a liner that can give you additional warmth for those c old days. The inner floating comfort fit cuffs are just the trick to keep the water from running down your arms thus keeping your insulating layer dry. The two inner security pockets allow for extra storage.

The Pro Qualifier bibs have full hip length 2-way leg zips allowing incredibly easy comfort and accessibility to your boots. The elastic waist allows for the comfortable fit in a range of motions. The articulated knee’s with the reinforced patches make for durability, long lasting protection of high wear areas.

Quick Guide to Rainwear

With so many options and features to choose from, finding the perfect rain gear can be quite intimidating. Besides price, there are other factors to consider. How often will you wear your rain gear? What activity will your rain gear be used for? Do you want a jacket or a parka? Will bibs or pants be needed? This guide and/or help from an associate from our Rain Wear Department at Bass Pro Shops can help make the process of buying easier.

Let’s go over some available options.

Waterproof

The most basic rainwear beyond ponchos is the PVC Rain Suit.  The Bass Pro Shops ® PVC Rainsuit is 100% waterproof and affordable at only $14.99.  It is ideal for occasional to rare usage, keeping you dry at minimal cost.  The jacket and pants easily roll up to be stashed away for storage, so you can keep it in your glove box for when a storm catches you off guard.  The jacket has a zipper closure with a storm flap, adjustable wrist cuffs, and a drawstring hood with visor. The back of the jacket features a vented cape to help regulate temperature by allowing airflow. The pants feature an elastic waist and snap closure ankle cuffs for a dry fit.  However, the primary drawback to PVC is it does not breathe. Therefore, if you have to wear it for any length of time, it starts to get very warm, and if it is warm outside, you can get uncomfortable fast.

For just under $50.00, you can get basic waterproof breathable protection with the RedHead® Lightweight Packable Rainsuit Jackets and Pants that are 100% waterproof and breathable.  Both pieces are constructed of 100% rip stop nylon taffeta treated with waterproof coating durable water repellency (DWR) and every stitch hole is designed to prevent leakage by being fully taped and sealed.  This option is lighter weight and slightly more breathable than PVC.

Membrane waterproof/breathable

Moving beyond basic rainwear, we encounter waterproof breathable membranes.  These membranes are both waterproof and breathable due to their micro-porous design.  These micro-pores are large enough to allow water vapor from your body to escape, but small enough to block raindrops.  The vapor molecules are smaller than the liquid water molecules, thereby allowing the escape of one, while blocking the other.  The best-known brand using this technology is Gore-Tex®, but also includes Columbia Sportswear’s Omni-Tech®, North Face's HyVent®, and Bass Pro Shops BONE-DRY®.

The RedHead® Stretch Rainwear Jacket for men starts at $69.99 and is a great example of a waterproof breathable rain jacket.  Made of a polyester/spandex blend, the jacket provides 4-way stretch, making it a comfortable jacket that allows freedom of movement.  It has a drawstring adjustable hood and two zippered slash front pockets.  An added bonus to this jacket is a drawstring bag to pack it away when not in use.  RedHead® Stretch Rainwear Pants are sold separately starting at $59.99.  The same technology is also available with the RedHead ® for Her Stretch Rainwear Jacket also priced at $69.99.

The Columbia® Watertight™ Rain Jackets for Men and the Columbia® Arcadia™ Omni-Tech® Rain Jackets for Ladies start at $70.00.  These are a good example of a lightweight shell type jacket.  They both feature 100% nylon outer shells with 100% polyester mesh lining.  These jackets utilize Columbia’s proprietary Omni-Tech® waterproof/breathable membrane, and have fully sealed seams.

The final item we will look at is the Bass Pro Shops® HPR (High Performance Rainwear) BONE-DRY® Waterproof Rain Jacket, starting at $119.99.  It features Bass Pro Shops proprietary BONE-DRY® 100% waterproof/breathable membrane technology, guaranteed to keep you dry. The jacket is constructed with a 100% nylon shell and features a hood with flexible visor, hook ’n’ loop storm flap and cuffs, articulated sleeves, a nylon mesh lining, adjustable elastic waist, and six pockets.  This jacket is waterproof, windproof, and breathable and will take care of you in some very adverse conditions.

Taking care of your rainwear

As you can see, there are many options available for rainwear and the best item will vary depending on the activity.  No matter what you buy, remember that the better and best rainwear items have built-in technology that may have additional care requirements.  Always follow the directions on the manufacturers’ tag so your gear is in the best condition possible.  To help you in the care and washing of your rainwear, find products designed specifically for cleaning and protecting it.  The ReviveX® Synthetic Fabric Cleaner is a special formula that cleans all types of outerwear.  After you clean your jacket or pants, you can reapply a topical DWR, like ReviveX® Spray-On Water Repellent, that will renew the protective coating on the shell of your jacket that causes rain to bead up and roll right off. Again, be sure to read the manufacturers’ tag to ensure the product is right for your gear.  With a little extra care, you can make your rainwear investment go the distance and last so you can stay dry in all of your outdoor pursuits.

A Changing of the Seasons

Summer is over and Fall is upon us. The changing of the seasons trigger some dramatic changes in the weather as well. As Fall settles in, frontal weather systems will become the 'norm' and it is important that we, as fishermen, boaters, hikers and outdoorsmen in general are well prepared for the elements we will face.

A summer shower is often a welcomed break from the heat in Tennessee. Rain clouds block the sun and cool off the air...as well as any and all who happen to be outside. The rain drops the water temperature for fishermen and knocks out the tree pollen for those of us with allergies. Getting caught in the rain in the Summer may leave you damp, but likely won't ruin your day. In the Fall however, being unprepared for a cold, rainy day can leave you miserable and potentially pose serious risks to your health.

Having the proper equipment to keep you warm and dry is important as the temperatures begin to drop. Whether you are fishing, hunting or hiking Bass Pro Shops has everything you need to make sure you are safe and comfortable in your time outdoors.

We have a large assortment of Rainwear to keep you dry and warm during any type of outdoor experience.

For boaters, our BPS 100MPH series of rain apparel is the best you can buy! You can be protected head-to-toe with this complete all-weather system made with Gore-Tex technology guaranteed to keep you dry in any condition. The system includes:

Light Jacket
The 100MPH Light Jacket

Parka
The 100MPH Parka

bibs
The 100MPH Bibs

liner
The 100MPH Fleece Parka Liner

gloves
The 100MPH Xtra Fit Gloves

Bass Pro also offers a large variety of rainwear and cool-weather clothing from Columbia, Frogg Toggs, Under Armour and Wohali.

So, be prepared for the upcoming break from the heat before its too late. Check out your local Bass Pro Shops store or view our great selection online.
